Ambitious but often guided by chance and circumstance, he eventually marries a wealthy widow in order to enter European aristocratic society. His rise slowly turns into an inevitable and gradual downfall.<\/p>\n<p>The film was made with an extreme attention to historical realism, notably using natural light and candlelight (especially for interior scenes). The shots are inspired by 18th-century European painting. The pacing is slow and contemplative, typical of Kubrick\u2019s style.<br \/>\nUpon release, the film received a mixed critical reception, with some considering it slow.
